Liken the Scriptures
Nephi and Laban (formally titled "I Will Go and Do") is Episode 1 in the "Liken the Scriptures" series
Treat your family to what is being called "a marvelous adventure" (Joan Peterson, Sounds of the Sabbath, KOSY-FM 106.5, Salt Lake City) with "I Will Go and Do," the first in a series of live-action movie musicals based on scripture stories, including those from the Book of Mormon.
In this episode, young Spencer (Garrett Summers) has a hard time paying attention in Primary. Fortunately, his teacher, Sister Larsen (Joy Gardner, "The Testaments"), knows just what Spencer needs in order to make the scripture stories exciting, and all it takes is a little imagination. But not even Sister Larsen can predict the amazing outcome of Spencer's imagination, where the story he's learning about turns into a fun, yet heart-warming, musical production. Cast also includes Larry Bagby (Disney's "Hocus Pocus," "Saints and Soldiers") as Laman, Merrill Dodge ("The R.M.") as Laban, and introduces Jared M. Young as Nephi. Your whole family will enjoy watching Nephi and his brothers as they return to Jerusalem to try to get the plates of brass from the fierce Laban.
"Don't be fooled by the child-centric premise of the story," says Thomas Baggaley, of Meridian Magazine. "Adults can enjoy it too — and in fact, that is one of its real successes."
Lyrics and music by LDS recording artist and producer Aaron Edson (whose CD, "Wondering," is also available at Deseret Book), "I Will Go and Do" was produced by One South Studios, Pasadena, California. The production was shot on two 24-frame, high-definition cameras to achieve high production values sure to be appreciated by today's media-savvy LDS families.
My family has really enjoyed the entire Liken series. It is both humorous and uplifting. With so few clean media selections now, it is a great blessing to see such a wonderful set of movies! Great job Liken!
We watched this video in YW on wed. night and again this morning during seminary. This is a FANTASTIC video! Most scripture movies are corny and silly, but this one is funny on purpose. Our whole class had the best time with this video. It does a great job of making the scriptures seem more real and less like just a story. The songs are amazing and so is everything else. Two thumbs way way up!
My family LOVES Liken!
A wonderful way to introduce reading the scriptures to younger children.
This is the first Liken movie made, and it explains well the concept of the series. My favorite song is the boy-band song by Nephi and his brothers. It's fun and touching and a great family DVD.
These are a little expensive, but a good teaching tool.
We love this!!!!!! Adults and children love this because it is so funny and so spiritual!!!!
My husband wanted to find movies dramatizing the Book of Mormon and came across this one from the library. Our 2 year old daughter LOVED it! She watched it over and over again and I didn't mind! She can't stop singing 'Life could not be better....'! It's been months since it went back to the library, and she still is singing! We're buying the CD/DVD combo for Christmas. The CD is for me! Aaron Edson is a great song writer! Great movie! Very well done! Kudos to everyone involved!
This DVD is wonderful. All of my children, from age 4 to 17, like it. This is the story of Nephi and the brass plates as a musical. It is entertaining and funny, but also teaches some great gospel principals. My family enjoyed this one so much, I went back to the store and bought Liken the Scriptures 2 & 3 and the soundtrack to Episode 1. I would highly recommend this movie.
Finally, great LDS family entertainment that is both spiritually uplifting and funny in the same production! While the episodes are based around the imaginations of primary aged children, this is entertainment that can easily be enjoyed by both young and not so young alike. My kids are all college age. They love them, but I think I am the biggest fan. The music is phenomenal, really, it is wonderful, and you can't help but sing them to yourself later. If you're looking for a pick-me-up and need something to put a smile on your face and a tear in your eye, you can't go wrong with any of the liken productions. I only wish they had been around when my kids were younger!
My children LOVE this movie. My 2 yr old always says Nephi when you ask her what movie she wants to watch. Mom and Dad like it too. Cant wait for the next one!!
