Just before their B-17 bomber crashes in German-occupied Austria, Captain Charlie Banks and his navigator, Sam Jenson, manage to parachute out of the plane. The two Americans are hidden from the Nazis by Marianne Leichtner, an Austrian girl. Her courage and character soon win Charlie’s heart.
When the Nazis come to investigate the plane crash, Charlie and Sam escape but must cross through enemy territory. Just steps from freedom, they are captured and thrown into an Italian prison run by fascists. Survival takes on a new meaning in the prison, where the American airmen experience beatings, torture, and illness. The only thing that keeps Charlie going is the hope of seeing Marianne again.
The war ends, Sam is hospitalized in Milan, and Charlie returns to England. After finding a way back to war-torn Austria, he arrives in Salzburg just in time to rescue Marianne from a revenge-driven Nazi officer. Charlie learns that his brother Peter, a member of the B-17 crew, also survived the crash. The brothers reunite. At the end of the book, Charlie and Marianne declare their love for each other.
While Crossing Lines can be read as a stand-alone novel, it was written as a sequel to 2014’s The Line That Divides, which is told from Marianne’s point of view.Crossing Lines is Charlie’s side of the story and reveals what occurred during the two years after he crossed into Germany.
